About the skill

What it does

The Lead Magnet Strategist takes a business's context and target buyer stage and produces an integrated lead magnet strategy covering everything you need to plan before building. The output has five layers: (1) format & topic recommendation, (2) content outline, (3) gating & capture plan, (4) landing page structure + delivery method, (5) distribution and measurement plan.

It focuses the magnet on a single sharp pain point ("how to write cold emails that get replies" > "marketing guide"), enforces high perceived value with low time investment (ideally consumable in under 10 minutes), and designs a natural path to the product — making visible a gap the product also fills. Format selection runs through an effort/time-to-create matrix (checklist 1-2h → ebook 1-3 weeks) mapped to the buyer stage.

When to use it

  • Planning a new email-list growth / lead-capture initiative and answering "what should we give away."
  • When an existing generic magnet (e.g. a sidebar ebook) converts poorly — to move to a content upgrade and the right gating depth.
  • Repurposing a blog post, webinar, or internal template into a gated content offer.
  • Designing an offer specific to one funnel stage (each stage demands a different format).

For interactive tools (calculators, graders, quizzes) it defers to free-tools; for writing the content itself to copywriting; for the follow-up nurture to emails.

Method / frameworks

  • Buyer-Stage Matching: awareness → consideration → decision, each with its own format set.
  • Gating Strategy: full / partial / ungated+optional / content-upgrade trade-offs; "ask for the minimum" (each extra field cuts conversion ~5-10%).
  • Content-upgrade principle: page-specific bonuses convert 2-5x better than generic sidebar CTAs; inline CTAs see ~121% higher CTR.
  • Measurement framework: landing-page conversion (20-40% warm / 5-15% cold), cost-per-lead, lead-to-customer (1-5% B2B), email engagement, time-to-conversion + lead-quality signals.
