About the skill

What it does

This skill applies the engineering-as-marketing discipline: before building anything, it plans, scores and scopes a free tool as a strategy. Adapted from coreyhaines31/marketingskills free-tools (MIT).

The flow runs on these named frameworks:

  • 4 Core Principles — (1) Solve a real problem (useful even without the main product), (2) Be adjacent to the core product (natural path tool→product), (3) Simple & focused (do one thing well), (4) Worth the investment (lead value × expected leads > build + maintenance cost).
  • 6 Tool-Type mapping — Calculator (ROI/savings), Generator (templates/policies/names), Analyzer (graders/audits), Tester (meta/speed), Library (icons/snippets), Interactive (quizzes/playgrounds).
  • Ideation Framework — what the audience Googles, tedious manual processes, and the assessment/benchmark data they need before buying.
  • 8-Factor Evaluation Scorecard — search demand, audience-to-buyer match, uniqueness, path to product, build feasibility, maintenance burden (inverse), link-building potential, share-worthiness. Each 1-5; 25+ strong, 15-24 promising, <15 reconsider.
  • Lead-Capture Gating — fully gated / partially gated / ungated+optional / fully ungated, with clear value-exchange and minimal friction (email only).
  • SEO & backlink angle — "[thing] calculator / generator / free [type]" keyword strategy; free tools attract links naturally.
  • Build-vs-Buy — custom build / no-code (Outgrow, Tally, Bubble, Webflow) / embed existing.
  • MVP Scope — core function only + essential UX + basic lead capture; account creation, saved results and advanced features deferred.

When to use

Use it when evaluating whether to give away a tool for free to generate leads, earn organic traffic/backlinks, or build brand awareness: "should I build a free tool", "ROI calculator", "grader/audit tool", "lead-gen tool". For downloadable content (ebooks, checklists, templates), use lead-magnets instead.

Method / frameworks

4 Core Principles · 6 Tool-Type taxonomy · Pain-Point Ideation · 8-Factor Evaluation Scorecard · Gating Matrix (4 levels) · SEO keyword + link-building model · Build-vs-Buy · MVP Scope. Industry benchmarks: B2B average lead conversion ~2-7% (top tier >10%), ToFu form sweet-spot 3-4 fields ~42% conversion, SEO lead close rate ~14.6% (vs outbound ~1.7%).

How do I use this skill?

You don't "run" a skill — after installing it you just tell the agent your task (e.g. ask for the relevant job), and the skill kicks in by itself when its description matches.

Upload the free-tools.zip you downloaded as-is — no packaging needed, the format is already correct (folder at root).

  1. Open Settings → Customize → Skills
  2. Upload → select the free-tools.zip you downloaded
  3. Claude reads SKILL.md; the name + description appear. Ready ✅
