What it does
Takes competitor website URLs and produces a profile dossier per competitor that fits one identical template, so profiles are directly comparable side by side. It fuses two data layers: (1) live site scraping — value proposition, target-audience signals and social proof from the homepage; tiers/prices/billing from the pricing page; product direction from features, about, customers and changelog; and (2) SEO/market data — domain authority/rank, total backlinks and referring-domain count, organic keyword footprint (top 3 / top 10 / top 100), estimated monthly organic traffic and traffic value, highest-traffic pages and organic competitors.
In the synthesis phase, claims are cross-checked (e.g., if the site claims "10,000 customers," does the traffic/backlink profile support that scale?). The output includes an "At a Glance" metric table, Positioning & Messaging, Product & Features, a Pricing matrix, Customers & Social Proof, SEO & Content Strategy, evidence-sourced Strengths & Weaknesses, and a "Competitive Implications for [Your Product]" section. For multiple competitors it also builds a _summary — landscape overview, comparison table, positioning map (simple↔complex, cheap↔premium), strategic takeaways and market gaps.
When to use it
When a GTM/marketing team needs to clarify the competitive landscape; before a pricing decision, to surface tier/packaging gaps; to source raw material for sales battle cards; to plan content/SEO around competitor content gaps; or to brief an investor/board on the competitive situation. Refresh quarterly in volatile markets, every six months in stable ones.
Method / frameworks
Core principles: facts over opinions (every claim traceable, inferences labeled), structured & comparable (one template), current data (date-stamped, staleness flagged), honest assessment. Frameworks: 4 Ps (Product / Price / Place / Promotion), SWOT, a 2-axis positioning map, Share of Voice for market share, and content/backlink gap analysis; on SEO, DA/DR (1-100) authority logic and referring-domain diversity (100 links from one domain < 100 links from 100 domains). Two modes — quick scan vs deep profile; parallel scraping with a consistent metric set across competitors.
